Dalai Lama Apologizes for Disturbing Request to Young Boy

On Monday, the Dalai Lama issued an apology in response to a viral video clip that showed him kissing a young boy on the lips and asking the child to "suck" his tongue.

According to CNN, the Dalai Lama's office released a statement on Monday where His Holiness apologized to the young boy, his family, and his friends worldwide for any pain his actions may have caused. The apology was made in response to a video that went viral online, showing the 87-year-old spiritual leader laughing while kissing a young boy on the mouth at an event held in Dharamshala back in February.

CNN reported that during the event, the Dalai Lama invited the young boy on stage and requested a hug and a kiss on the lips. Afterward, the spiritual leader asked the child to "suck" his tongue, as per the same source.

“His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident,” the statement from the office of the Dalai Lama continued.

CNN noted that the identity of the young boy is currently unknown, but that he was participating in an event organized by the M3M Foundation, a philanthropic subsidiary of the Indian real estate company M3M Group. In a statement provided to CNN, M3M expressed condemnation for "all forms of child abuse."

“Some news refer to Tibetan culture about showing tongue, but this video is certainly not about any cultural expression and even if it is, such cultural expressions are not acceptable,” the group continued.

As the 14th reincarnation of the leader of the "Yellow Hat" school of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama is revered by millions of followers worldwide. Following a failed Tibetan uprising against the Chinese in 1959, he has been residing in India.
