Former Atlanta Police Officer Garrett Rolfe, the suspect in the death of Rayshard Brooks, is facing 11 charges. The fallout from this continued on Wednesday night.
Vince Champion, the head of the police union in Atlanta, said during an interview with Fox 5 Atlanta that the Atlanta Police Department has hit an all-time low. This backs up a similar claim made earlier by Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.
“It’s the worst day in law enforcement in the city of Atlanta that’s ever been,” Champion said.
Champion did not offer an opinion on the incident based on the video everyone has seen.
“I’m not going to make an assumption based on a video that I don’t know anything about,” he added. “I’ve been a cop for 30 years. We go with the evidence leads us. Looking at videos and not knowing the whole thing, I don’t have an opinion.”
According to Brian Hill of Fox 5, he has "multiple sources" that indicate there has been a walkout by some police. Despite this, the city's police department is downplaying the situation.
Here is a statement sent to Fox 5 Wednesday evening:
"Earlier suggestions that multiple officers from each zone had walked off the job were inaccurate. However, department is experiencing a higher than usual number of call outs with the incoming shift. We have enough resources to maintain operations and remain able to respond to incidents throughout the city."
