'248% Increase in Price': Viral Video Reveals Kevin McCallister of Home Alone's Grocery Bill in Biden's Economy

In the current economic climate, under President Joe Biden's administration, Kevin McCallister's grocery bill from "Home Alone" would likely exceed $20.

A TikTok user named Geoffrey Lyons analyzed the cost of Kevin's shopping in the 1990 movie and compared it to prices in 2023, as reported by the New York Post. This analysis sparked curiosity about how modern inflation affects the financial aspects of this beloved Christmas movie.

Kevin's shopping list in "Home Alone" included these ten items: a TV dinner, a loaf of Wonder Bread, frozen macaroni and cheese, cling wrap, a half-gallon of milk, Tide laundry detergent, toilet paper, a half-gallon of orange juice, a pack of army men, and dryer sheets. The New York Post reported that, with a $1 discount coupon for the orange juice, Kevin's total expenditure came to $19.83.

Lyons calculated the present-day cost of each item on Kevin McCallister's grocery list in the United States. He found that the total would now amount to $63.73 before tax, as reported by the outlet. With the inclusion of the coupon, the final total reaches approximately $68, representing a 248% increase from the prices 30 years ago.

“So, I broke it down, $4.50 for the orange juice. $4.50 for the saran wrap. TV dinner: couldn’t find the same one, so we did $5 for that one because it had the food inside,” Lyons said. “$13.00 for the Tide. $3.00 for the Wonder Bread. $3.50 for the frozen mac. $4.60 for the milk. You got $8.79 for the dryer sheets. You got $8.00 for the toilet paper, and you got just $9.00 for the toy soldiers.”

The video garnered over 3 million views, with numerous comments reflecting surprise at the significant economic changes highlighted in the analysis.

“I bet the cashier’s wage is still the same in 2023,” one user commented.
