Trump Makes Announcement on the Fate of TikTok

President Donald Trump said on Monday that Microsoft was in talks to acquire TikTok. This came after the app briefly went dark last week. Trump hinted he’d like to see a bidding war for the platform.

He mentioned discussions with multiple parties regarding TikTok’s potential acquisition. With about 170 million American users, the app’s future is expected to be decided within 30 days, according to Reuters.

TikTok went offline temporarily just before a law took effect on Jan. 19. The law required ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to sell the app or face a ban.

After taking office on Jan. 20, Trump signed an executive order. This delayed the law’s enforcement by 75 days.

The move to enforce the law stemmed from concerns over data misuse. Officials worried TikTok was mishandling its users’ information.
