Tim Walz, the vice presidential nominee, was interrupted during a speech to the Women’s Caucus at the Democratic National Convention by a small group of pro-Palestinian protesters.
The protesters, from Code Pink, shouted, "stop killing women in Gaza" and held banners with messages like “Kamala: No weapons to Israel” and "arms embargo now."
Walz did not respond to them. Instead, the crowd drowned out the protesters with chants of “USA.” Security quickly removed the demonstrators from the room at McCormick Place.
This disruption highlights the ongoing tension within the party. The pro-Palestinian "uncommitted" movement is pushing for a permanent cease-fire in Gaza and an arms embargo against Israel. Harris, however, does not support these demands. The party platform, adopted on Monday, calls for a "lasting cease-fire deal" but also emphasizes Israel's "ironclad" right to defend itself.
Despite this, leaders of the uncommitted movement see Harris as more open to persuasion than President Biden. They, along with protesters both inside and outside the convention, continue to press her on the issue.
The convention is taking place amid the administration's efforts to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Monday that Israel has agreed to a cease-fire proposal, and now the decision lies with Hamas.
