Democrats Reach for a Loan
Campaign finance is often sold as a battle of ideas, but the closing stretch also comes down to bank paperwork. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee drew a $15 million loan from Amalgamated Bank on October 5, according to the latest FEC report. The loan is scheduled to mature on June 30, 2028, carries a listed 6 percent or base-rate-minus-one interest provision, and uses current and future assets as collateral. The report covers October 1 through 14, as Election Day on November 3 approaches. During that window, Democrats took in roughly $28 million and spent about $32.3 million. Cash fell from about $24.9 million to $20.7 million by October 14, while the full debt remained. More than $16.1 million went to coordinated spending for Senate candidates. Even after counting the loan among receipts, outlays exceeded receipts by about $4.27 million.
Musk’s PAC Brings a Different Ledger
Republicans faced the same expensive Senate map, but the financing was less dependent on a lender. Elon Musk’s America PAC reported nearly $76.8 million in fresh receipts during the same two-week period. Its FEC filing lists $12.6 million from Musk on October 6, $19 million on October 8, and $43.2 million on October 14. Those cash contributions totaled $74.8 million. The filing also credits Musk with about $1.98 million in in-kind support for voter data, analytics, survey research, petition administration, and web services. The math is not mysterious, which is a nice change for campaign finance. Together, the cash and in-kind entries made up the reported haul.

Cash Becomes Turnout
America PAC did not merely park the money. It spent about $42.7 million in the October 1 to 14 window, including more than $27.6 million on independent expenditures and about $14.2 million in operating costs. It still finished with roughly $46.5 million in the bank. Before the new receipts arrived, the operation was being rebuilt around door-knocking, direct mail, and digital voter contact. That gave the Republican side a large reserve for the final stretch, while the DSCC was spending more than it raised and carrying new debt. The contrast is less a mystery than a ledger: one side borrowed $15 million, while one donor supplied more than five times that amount to the PAC.

A Larger Texas Reserve
The broader Republican effort also drew on a much larger September transfer. Axios reported that Musk supplied $158 million to Senate Leadership Fund as Republicans began a major rescue operation for Ken Paxton in Texas. The money arrived in two installments, $75 million on September 9 and $83 million on September 23. Those checks represented nearly 58 percent of the group’s $273 million third-quarter fundraising haul. America PAC built its own turnout operation around the Texas contest while also committing resources to other Senate battlegrounds. The purpose was to avoid draining the rest of the map to defend one costly seat. The supplied campaign posts also show the turnout message being built around President Trump and appearances in Michigan and Mississippi.
