On Friday California Governor Gavin Newsom said some schools in the state will remain online-only instead of in-person classes.
If a school is in a county on the state of California's coronavirus watch list, then they do not meet Newsom's criteria to open. That means 80 percent of the schools in the state are unable to open in the fall as of Friday.
One of those counties is Orange County, where the board of education just approved reopening without social distancing or masks.
Newsom also set requirements for any school that opens for teachers and students in third grade and higher are required to wear masks. They also have to social distance, check for symptoms and increase the hand-washing and sanitation.
The California Governor did say he is hopeful some counties will "fall off" the list so they are able to reopen physically.
"Our default is in-person, but we have to do it in a safe way," Newsom said.
