Hackers Send Explicit Images to Parents on School Messaging App

A popular school messaging app was hacked and used to send explicit images to parents and teachers.

The explicating images were shared on the app Seesaw, a platform for student engagement. The photo was shared with a bit.ly link. Bit.ly shortens links and conceals where they are coming from to make it more likely the parents and teachers clicked on it.

The image showed a well-known meme of a man performing an explicit act.

Seesaw released a statement on Wednesday that said “specific user accounts were compromised by an outside actor,” vice president of marketing, Sunniya Saleem, shared with NBC News.

“We are taking this extremely seriously,” she said. “Our team continues to monitor the situation to ensure we prevent further spread of these images from being sent or seen by any Seesaw users.”

The Seesaw platform allows lets students to share links as well as media, such as photos, videos, drawings, text, and PDF with teachers and families.

“Nothing is shared without teacher approval,” the platform claims.
